Debut: a waste of money

After I have watched the movie the Debut, I have done further resources about it. I even look through some videos on YouTube to see what a real life debut was like. Sure it is formal, but why celebrate in her 18th birthday? Why spend so much money for this event? In fact, after looking at some videos on You Tube, I find this party very out of my interest. I might show up for only 30 minutes there and say “Happy 18th Birthday Rose” then leave and go somewhere else. In one YouTube video clips, I saw the debuante singing karaoke, and in another clip, I see a group of guys dancing like wussies. Then the food there looks either fattening or outright groose. It is a good thing they do not have a balut, then I would puke. But after thinking about costs and stuff like that, a Debut is simply a waste of money, and with college, Senior Prom, and other events happening around the 18th birthday, it is a burden for that expense.

Some of the changes that Filipino families should consider:
 Debuts should be held in the daugter’s 16th birthday. Get that, sweet 16 when it is the driving age. It is her sophomore year in high school, so not much burden to consider.
 Parties can be held in the backyard. No need to rent a banquet room. Especially when it is between March to September, outdoors will be perfect to have a party. A barbeque will be the main entree for the party. Filipino foods can be fused with Ameircan influence.
 People can bring their own food. No need to have a cater come by and set up one.
 Party does not have to be too formal. The most formal event in her high school life must be the Senior Prom, therefore, make a Debut less significant than that.
 A cost for a typical Debut will cost $1000-$2000. With my ideas, it would only cost no more than $200. That would be a huge savings after all of these expenses you need to put up with.

You're a disgrace to the Filipino community. Who are you to tell your roots and culture what it should and should not do? You are undeserving and selfish of what your forefathers have done to place you where you are now. Be proud of who you are..BROWN.

why do you even care if it became a tradition to celebrate debuts during the 18th birthday of a lady? if they want to waste money on such expensive places, excessive food, unneccesary souvenirs, blah-blah..so what? it's their money, the can spend it the way they want it to. if it is what will make them happy, then so be it. it's just so non-sense of you to be bragging about something you'll not go through. err. sorry but, this is also just my opinion about your opinion. no hard feelings dude.

I see what you mean, Debuts are a waste of money! & NOT a disgrace to the Filipino community. It's by a view point of a person - be more realistic.

*To the person who typed "your are undeserving and selfish" - It's an opinion how the hell did that come to be selfish? Read again! "forefathers have done to place you where you are now" - What are you trying to imply? What have you're forefathers have done to place you where you are now? By the way the statement is the anger building up because someone stated their opinions about the topic.

(comment at 4:31PM one word for you "CHILL"! This person typed down his/her feelings their opinions.)

I think when they do Debuts it is like showing off that they have money.

BUT! Before other people hiding in their computers bash, it's our opinions, either you like it or not. Stop being jerks!

Tradition is always a tradition, nobody can change it. It's so strange if your guest would bring in a food on a debut event unless it is your relative who wants to give a special treats.

We cannot the history of celebrating debuts here in the Philippines in a sweet 16 way... This traditional 18th birthday debut had already written in filipino history books.

Spending money on a debut is not a waste of money because it reflects the social status of the celebrant where family she came from.

a debut isnt the same as a sweet 16. a family can have a sweet 16 party, but it makes no sense to call it such
