Flip is a term used colloquially by Filipino American youth to refer to those of Filipino descent.
According to the late journalist and activist Alex Fabros, Sr. (1903–1999), the term was first used among Filipinos sometime after his immigration to the United States in 1929.
The term came into widespread use in the 1980s and the 1990s.
While Flip is usually used inoffensively, the folk etymology of the term is that it is an acronym for fucking little island people which was allegedly coined by American soldiers during World War II. In response, many young Filipino Americans changed the first word of the acronym to funny, fine, or friendly. The slang flip was invariably used as an acronym for fine-looking island people by Flip Gear, a California-based clothing brand.
A more plausible etymology of the term is that it is derived from the word Filipino.
There are Filipinos who do avoid the term for other reasons (such as "flipped" being used to mean "gone crazy", giving the term a perceived negative connotation) and prefer to be simply called Filipino or Pinoy/Pinay instead.
So the statement that American soldiers used the tern "Flip" during World War II is just an urban legend. So filipinos who got offened with this term are bleeding-hearted wussies wanting this racist term to stop. Bullshit. So where is the word "Flip" used in:
Flip-flop: A pair of thong slippers. Or a term to decribe a politician like John Kerry who changes his position on a certain issue. Not a racist term.

I remember first time hearing flip was in the late 80's it went with the word fob. I think both words been around longer than that and was always a negative term towards Filipinos. But at the same time people were calling each other that but it was ok if It was amongst Filipinos. I have no clue why it made it ok that way lol. I guess it was kinda like how black people use the term nigga with each other. We all know it's wrong but people still do it. People think the word is ok cuz they never confronted racist people of another race and got that word thrown at them. It is very hurtful but what's more disturbing is that recently there's people in the Philippines calling themselves flips. And the number one reason why they say they use it it's because it sounds "cool."
